The first drawing depicts a landscape with Apollo dozing and Mercury stealing his bow and his flock. This foreground scene is set against an antique landscape with a temple on the right and a castle in the distance. This mythological scene is based on a composition by Claude Gelée, known as Le Lorrain.
The second drawing depicts a pastoral scene with animals grazing on the banks of a river, two women in antique dress helping a goat. In the background, ancient ruins overgrown with vegetation bear witness to a bygone era. The whole evokes Italian landscapes and compositions by Claude Lorrain (1600-1682), who often painted ruins and idealized scenes of the Italian countryside.
The two sepia-tone watercolor and brown ink wash drawings are in original gilded wooden frames, with a blue passe-partout and the artist's EM monogram, which we have been unable to identify.
