Fan-shaped mantel screen in chased and gilded brass and bronze. The central post is decorated with a female face surrounded by olive branches, trimmings and interlacing acanthus leaves. The fire screen is topped by a flame, a reference to the object's function of protecting against the force of fire. The eight openwork brass leaves of this fireplace screen unfurl like peacock feathers. It can also be closed by folding the leaves and holding them in place with chains, to save space when not in use. It stands on four scrolled feet.
