"LANDSCAPES WITH COWS", PAIR OF OIL ON PANEL, SIGNED DIEBOLDT
Two oil on panel paintings of "Landscapes with cows", attributed to Jean-Michel Diebolt (1779-1824). Both paintings show mountain landscapes with cows. The first painting shows a couple of shepherds accompanied by cows, goats and a dog. The man is holding a goat in one hand and a kid in the other, while his companion is sitting astride a horse (or donkey). The second oil painting shows two cows in the foreground, one of which is confronting the shepherd's dog. In the background, on the other side of the river, is a shepherd and the rest of the herd. The paintings are signed: on one painting the signature of "M. Diebolt" is clearly visible, on the other it has faded slightly. The two original frames date from the 19th century. Jean-Michel Diebolt (1779-1824) was a French painter of landscapes and animals. He was a pupil of Suvé and Demarne. He was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1824.
