PENDULUM OF LOVE AND PSYCHE AFTER CLAUDE MICHALLON
sold
A clock depicting the "Coronation of Cupid" or "Cupid and Psyche," after a model by Claude Michallon. Psyche, draped in wet fabric held by a belt, leans over the central griotte marble post to crown Cupid, recognizable by his wings and quiver at his waist. The gilt bronze dial with Roman numerals is set within the post, which is decorated with a lyre surrounded by oak leaves. The rectangular base and plinth are adorned with ogee leaf friezes, wreaths, garlands, trophies of arms, and rosettes. The whole rests on four small winged claw feet in gilt bronze. This is a 19th-century piece. This figure, created by Michallon (1751-1799) during the Directory period, after an antique marble from the Capitoline Hill in Rome dating from the 1st or 2nd century AD, itself based on a Greek original from the Hellenistic period, enjoyed great success due to its grace and the popularity of the Cupid and Psyche subject in the 19th century. It was reproduced numerous times, notably by Feuchère and Thomire. Some examples are held in renowned museums such as the Château de Fontainebleau, the Musée Marmottan-Monet, the Hôtel de la Marine in Paris, and the Royal Collections of England. Empire period, circa 1815. Dimensions: L: 37cm, D: 18cm, H: 54cm. Dimensions: W: 14.6in, D: 7.1in, H: 21.3in. Condition report: In good overall condition. Some wear to the gilding. The movement has been cleaned, serviced and is in working order.
