A red Griotte marble and gilt bronze inkwell depicting an allegory of writing by Henri Chapu (1833-1891). This antique 19th-century writing set comprises a pen holder carved from marble and two inkwells with gilt bronze lids. The marble is embellished with gilt bronze motifs of laurel wreaths, tori, and buds. The inkwells are lined with translucent glass. At the center of the inkwell is a finely sculpted bronze bas-relief with a black patina, depicting a seated nude young woman holding a quill in her right hand and a manuscript in her left. This figure, illustrating the allegory of writing, is signed "Henri CHAPU" in the lower right corner. This writing set rests on four small, toupie-shaped gilt bronze feet, each adorned with strings of beads.
