A bronze sculpture with a brown patina depicting Sappho, after Jean-Jacques, known as James Pradier (1790-1852). The poet rests one hand on an ornate altar in the form of an Ionic column, and with the other, holds a lyre. She is adorned with jewelry and wears a beautiful antique-style tunic. Signed and dated "J. PRADIER 1848" and "VP" (for Victor Paillard) surmounted by a crown. Exhibited at the Salon in 1848, the bronze version of this work, inspired by classical art, is now in the collection of Osborne House, a British royal residence on the Isle of Wight. "Sappho" was one of Pradier's most frequently reproduced figures. The Girodet Museum owns a bronze edition of this work. 19th century, circa 1850. Dimensions: W: 21 cm, D: 17 cm, H: 45 cm.
