A tripod Satsuma earthenware incense burner decorated with polychrome enamels and gold. The body is adorned on one side with richly dressed figures representing teachers instructing two young children, and on the other with scenes of daily life. The scenes unfold against a background of rich floral and geometric designs. The handles and lid finial are in the form of dragons. Signed under the base. Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912). This incense burner is a fine example of Japonisme, which captivated Europe between 1860 and the beginning of the 20th century. Circa 1890
