Edition in patinated bronze after Philippe Magnier (1648-1715), produced by the Barbedienne foundry using the Collas mechanical reproduction process. This sculpture depicts two naked men wrestling on the ground. They stand on a bumpy oval base. The bronze bears the Collas reproduction stamp. This representation is based on a work from the Uffizi Palace, created by Philippe Magnier between 1684 and 1688. The original was destined for the park of the Château de Versailles, before being moved to the park of the Château de Marly. The bronze revival of this theme reflects the taste of the bourgeoisie under Louis-Philippe for the classical themes found in European museums. This is a 19th-century work. Since 1838, Ferdinand Barbedienne and Achille Collas have been working closely together at the Barbedienne foundry. They created bronzes based on Antique models, using the mechanical reproduction technique invented by Collas. For them, it was an opportunity to democratize art by making it more accessible to the bourgeoisie of the time.
