A solid elm sideboard by Pierre Chapo. Rectangular in shape with four drawers, this piece is distinguished by the blue enameled lava plaque covering its upper section. The craftsmanship and joinery are of exceptional quality. Pierre Chapo (1927-1987), born into a family of artisans, studied at the lycée in Romainville, then in Vierzon between 1937 and 1947. He worked for a time in a shipwright's workshop before beginning architectural studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He graduated in 1958, having frequently interrupted his studies to travel in the United States and Europe. He then opened a studio in Clamart and a shop in Paris on Boulevard de l'Hôpital. He drew considerable inspiration from the work of Charlotte Perriand. Ten years later he acquired a house in Gordes where he established the headquarters of the Chapo SA Company. He then devoted himself mainly to carpentry and cabinetmaking while giving lectures on his great passion, wood.
