An alabaster sculpture depicting the Three Graces dancing in a circle and holding a crown of flowers. The three young women, dressed in Greek-style tunics, are individually rendered. They rest on a tall cylindrical pedestal adorned with vine tendrils, twisted lines, and a frieze of water leaves. This is an Italian work from Tuscany.
The Three Graces, also known as the Charites, are goddesses associated with charm, beauty, and creativity. Daughters of Zeus and Eurynome, they are linked to Venus in their role of distributing beauty throughout the world. Aglaia, the splendid one, Euphrosyne, the joyful one, and Thalia, the verdant one, dance for the Olympian gods to the sound of Apollo's lyre. This famous theme was widely disseminated from antiquity onward.
