Thonet -style rocking chair with a tubular metal frame and a seat and back upholstered in black faux leather. The seat height at the front is 43 cm and the seat depth is 50 cm. Made in the 1950s . The seat and back have been reupholstered.
Originally, the rocking chair was simply a chair with legs to which a curved piece of wood was added, allowing it to rock back and forth. This is one of those ingenious innovations that changed the history of furniture. In the most original creations, such as the Thonet rocking chair, the four traditional legs disappear, replaced by an interlacing of bent wood that combines strength and lightness, stability and rocking, as well as pure Art Nouveau . It was around 1830 that Michael Thonet (1796-1871), a master cabinetmaker and furniture designer of Viennese origin, began to use steam-bending wood techniques for his furniture, adapting the know-how of coopers and shipbuilders. His creations quickly became very successful, particularly with breweries, which furnished themselves with chairs, including the famous No. 14 chair, produced in the millions. Today, Thonet manufactures classic bentwood and tubular steel furniture as well as many new products designed by renowned architects and designers such as Stefan Diez, Naoto Fukasawa, Hadi Teherani, Delphin Design, James Irvine...
