Small tilting pedestal table in wood and black lacquered papier-mâché. The shaped top is decorated with gilt foliate motifs on the edge and base, and with painted flowers inlaid with mother-of-pearl in the center. It rests on a baluster-shaped stem ending in a round base decorated with gilt scrolls and foliage. Napoleon III period. Good condition. In the 1850s and 1860s, black was the color of luxury, reminiscent of ebony and Far Eastern lacquers. The bourgeoisie purchased furniture and objects made of papier-mâché, a material based on boiled cotton, lacquered and inlaid with mother-of-pearl, a technique that allowed for the creation of shimmering effects and complex forms at a lower cost. Napoleon III period, circa 1860. Dimensions: W: 51cm, D: 51cm, H: 68.5cm.
