A Transition-style commode with a slight central projection, veneered with a frieze pattern, opening in the frieze with a drawer and in the front with two wide drawers without a central divider. In furniture, frieze is a decorative technique that consists of joining sheets of veneer to create a pattern in the form of a lozenge, chevron, fan, butterfly wing, square, cross, or diamond point. Our commode is decorated with a lozenge frieze. The mounts, keyhole escutcheons, drawer pulls, uprights, finial, and feet are adorned with chased and gilt bronze mounts featuring interlacing patterns, florets, garlands, and acanthus leaves. The fluted uprights extend into four claw feet. The top is veined marble. A plaque affixed to one drawer is marked: "Mobilier décorations anciens et modernes Mercier Frères 100 Fg. St-Antoine Paris". Late 19th century, circa 1890. Dimensions: W: 128cm, D: 58cm, H: 88cm. In very good condition, a small stain on the lower drawer.
