Large Louis XV style mirror with carved and gilded wood frame with rosewood veneer. Wide moldings decorated with leafy clasps, jagged acanthus leaves and scrolls. The curved top rail is profusely decorated with gadrooned leaves and a shell. This opulent and sophisticated composition, combining curves and counter-curves, shells and tormented plant ornamentation, was very much in vogue in the 1730's. Known as "Rocaille" or "Rococo", this style, which testifies to great fantasy and freedom of treatment, was widely imitated in the second half of the 19th century. The blond wood frame of our mirror highlights its molding and delicately carved gilded ornamentation. Napoleon III period, Circa: 1860 Dim: W:146cm, D:12cm, H:250cm. In good overall condition. Some gilding. Cracks in the joints of the wooden frame structure.
