Two bronze sculptures with a gilt patina by Auguste Louis Lalouette (1826-1883), depicting "The Challenge" as a pair on a marble base. The duelists, dressed in 16th-century fashion, wear exquisitely refined attire, swords in hand, and pose defiantly with their gaze. Their posture is very elegant, and they are clad in short breeches reaching mid-thigh, revealing their bare legs, an elaborate shirt, a cape, a feathered hat, and earrings. Circa 1870
This work was created in the mid-19th century during a revival and renewed interest in the Gothic and Renaissance styles. This style is known as Neo-Gothic.
