A pair of oil paintings on canvas depicting "The Storm" and "Spring" signed lower right "L. Laussox after Cot" in a beautiful molded, stuccoed and gilded wooden frame.
French School of the 19th century.
Pierre Auguste Cot was born in Bédarieux and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse and then Paris. He exhibited his works at the Paris Salon from 1863 onwards and became popular in the 1870s. The two original paintings are currently held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and are considered his major works. "Spring" is dated 1873 and "The Storm" 1880. Their success was such that several copies were made at the end of the 19th century, including our paintings. We have been unable to find any further information about the copyist.
Dimensions as seen: H: 108cm, W: 63cm.
