Pair of Restoration-period opaline vases of ovoid form. Each soapy white opaline vase has a flared neck and rests on a pedestal, and a square ormolu base, chased with foliage. The body, neck and foot are adorned with Gothic arcatures enclosing medieval-inspired figures - troubadours and minstrels, playing music or dancing. The gold decoration was hand-painted in Jean-Baptiste Desvignes' workshop.
Appearing towards the end of the 11th century, the troubadours were poet-singers who toured France, visiting the courts of kings, princes and barons. They were accompanied by musicians called minstrels, who played the trumpet, violin or psaltery.
