A large Louis XV style mirror with a carved and gilded wooden frame with moldings and a rosewood veneer background. The wide moldings are decorated with foliate clasps, jagged acanthus leaves, and scrolls. The undulating upper rail is lavishly adorned with gadrooned leaves and a shell motif. This opulent and sophisticated composition, combining curves and counter-curves, shells, and intricate plant motifs, was very fashionable in the 1730s. Known as "Rocaille" or "Rococo," this style, characterized by great imagination and freedom of execution, was widely imitated in the second half of the 19th century. The light wood frame of our mirror highlights its molding and delicately carved gilt ornamentation. Napoleon III period, circa 1860. Dimensions: W: 146cm, D: 12cm, H: 250cm. In good overall condition. Some touch-ups to the gilding. Cracks at the joints of the wooden frame structure.
