Documentation: Gilbert Poillerat (1902-1988) was a French decorator and master wrought iron craftsman. He trained at the École Boulle in Paris, where he discovered metalwork. Graduating in 1921, he joined the workshop of Edgar Brandt, a building ironworker, with whom he remained for six years. At the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts, Brandt presented his work in the Collector's Pavilion, to which Poillerat contributed anonymously as a designer. He began exhibiting his creations under his own name in 1927, the year he joined the elevator and metal construction company Baudet, Donon et Roussel, specifically the department dedicated to decorative elements of contemporary ironwork. As early as 1928, Poillerat exhibited his work at the Salon d'Automne. Deeply classical by nature and respectful of the Old Masters, his taste leaned towards the forms of the Grand Siècle (the 17th century). This era was characterized by the abandonment of right angles in favor of curves and arabesques, which suited him perfectly. From 1935 onwards, he received prestigious public commissions, such as the doors of the Palais de Chaillot, the railings of the Bibliothèque nationale (National Library), and the lighting fixtures for the Eiffel Tower restaurant. Nevertheless, Poillerat sometimes departs from the monumental to create smaller objects: floor lamps, andirons, small interior grilles, and screens inspired by the work of blacksmiths of yesteryear. 20th century, circa 1950. Dimensions: W: 55cm, D: 55cm, H: 200cm.
