A Louis XVI style worktable in marquetry of various woods and gilt bronze mounts. This charming Napoleon III period worktable opens with a shaped top adorned within a cartouche with superb marquetry depicting musical attributes (tambourine, bow, quiver, etc.). The cartouche is framed by friezes of flowers, foliage, and geometric motifs finely inlaid in both flat-leaf and painted wood. The piece is inlaid on all sides with scrolls, finials, and a frieze of foliage. When opened, the worktable reveals a mirror, a central drawer with sliding doors, and two small side drawers. The worktable closes with a small key. The whole rests on four tapered and fluted legs, punctuated by chased bronze mounts. A stretcher crossing over a sculpted gilt bronze finial supports the entire piece. Allegorical themes surrounding music developed particularly in the last quarter of the 18th century during the reign of Louis XVI. Interest in the arts, such as music, went hand in hand with the liberation of society during the Enlightenment. Circa: 1860
