Marble sculpture, stone and alabaster statue
Probably the most commonly used stone in sculpture, marble has been prized since antiquity for its translucency (comparable to that of human skin), flexibility, and durability. Marble's preference over other materials stems from its fine grain, which allows sculptors to render even the smallest details of their statues. Alabaster, on the other hand, enhances the colors of skin tones and drapery thanks to its naturally warmer hue.
The Atena Gallery offers a select collection of antique marbles: figurative marble statues, stone sculptures, and alabaster statuettes from the 19th century to the Art Deco period. The subjects represented are varied: busts of young women, odalisques, draped female figures, couples and goddesses from ancient mythology, putti, busts of young boys, and copies after famous statuettes by Antonio Canova , Houdon , Falconet , Lemire and Guglielmo Pugi .
Among the most frequently used types of stone are white marble, Carrara marble , black marble, alabaster, and polychrome alabaster.
