A biscuit porcelain statuette after Étienne-Maurice Falconet (1716-1791). Two winged cherubs are depicted in combat to retrieve a heart sculpted on the base. The piece rests on a handsome walnut plinth. Signed on the base "Pigalle" and with the Samson factory mark. This sculpture, usually attributed to Falconet, has also been attributed to Pigalle. Both sculptors worked for Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne.
Documentation: This theme allowed Falconet to depict a subject dear to the 18th century while also showcasing his skill in representing movement. The group "Two Cupids Quarreling Over a Heart," produced at Sèvres, was a great success and widely reproduced in porcelain, marble, and bronze. Furthermore, works from the Sèvres manufactory, sent as diplomatic gifts to various European courts, were also extensively copied. Among the most sought-after models were Falconet's children and bathers, which, due to his renown, quickly found their way into manufactories throughout Europe, from Vienna to Copenhagen, and from England to Italy.
Dimensions without the base: L: 26 cm, D: 22 cm, H: 41 cm.
