1stdibs was created in 2001 by the young art collector Michael Bruno, who wanted to bring together the world's leading art dealers and galleries on a single platform. His project was born in Paris, during a visit to the famous Saint-Ouen Flea Market. It was then that he conceived the idea of creating a website that would make the art objects of the French capital accessible to enthusiasts worldwide.
Launched in France, the platform then expanded to New York, Los Angeles, New Orleans, and Chicago. In 2012, 1stdibs strengthened its European presence by acquiring Onlinegalleries.com, the UK's leading online marketplace for antiques. The company continued its international expansion by partnering with Expertissim, the e-commerce site specializing in the sale of appraised art, antiques, and jewelry. Simultaneously, 1stdibs expanded into Spain and Italy.
The following year, the company expanded worldwide and many art dealers from Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Austria joined the platform.
Today, 1stdibs.com is the leading online platform for selling high-end antiques and art objects and the largest North American online marketplace for art, jewelry, and home decor . According to the Harvard Business Review, "1stdibs.com has become the primary source for research on antiques and collectible furniture, surpassing the famous auction houses of Christie's and Sotheby's" [1].
