What was the Biedermeier period?
The Biedermeier period began in the states of the German Confederation and the Austrian Empire in 1815 (Congress of Vienna) and ended in 1848 (March Revolution). The Biedermeier style primarily refers to the decorative arts, but also influenced sculpture and painting. In contrast to the opulence and heroism of Napoleon I's Empire, the Biedermeier style promoted calm and simplicity. From 1830 onward, it embodied a new, comfortable, bourgeois way of life.
In furniture design, the emphasis is on the structure of the furniture with robust and geometric shapes, softened by curves .
The simplicity of the materials - essentially light woods - is compensated by the variety and exuberance of the forms: the backs of the seats are fan-shaped, the armrests of the sofas curl around themselves, the secretaries are adorned with arcades.
Our 1830 period mahogany sofa perfectly embodies the refinement and sophistication of that era, where the pursuit of comfort and utility were paramount.
