A bronze group with a brown patina depicting Venus and Adonis surmounting a black marble mantel clock with applied frieze decoration of a procession of antique huntresses in gilt bronze. The dial features Roman numerals for the hours and a gilt bronze frame. The original movement has been cleaned, serviced, and is in working order. French School, 19th century. Our bronze can be stylistically compared to the works of Jean-Baptiste, known as Auguste Clésinger (1814-1883), due to the choice of subject—a mythological theme in which he specialized—the treatment of the faces, and the poses of the two protagonists. The artist chose to represent the most well-known scene from the story of Adonis, in which Venus tries to prevent him from going hunting. Napoleon III period, circa 1870. Dimensions: W: 25cm, D: 54cm, H: 78cm.
