Restoration period gilt bronze "peddler" clock , depicting a winged Cupid in motion, leaning on a thyrsus and carrying the clockwork mechanism on his back. The theme of the traveling merchant carrying his wares was very popular during the Romantic period, as were other subjects portraying various trades: sailor, gardener, laborer, etc. Our peddler is adorned with a garland of vine leaves and wears sandals. His eyes are enameled, contrasting with the gilt patina of his face. Behind him is a basket filled with fruit. The clock rests on an oval base decorated with vine leaves, raised on four claw feet.
