A patinated bronze sculpture, a 19th-century edition after the famous marble by Antoine Coysevox (1640-1720), created between 1685 and 1686. Coysevox, sculptor to the King and a favorite of Hardouin-Mansart, produced works in the Baroque and classical styles for Versailles, notably marble replicas of antique sculptures of Crouching Venus and Venus with a Shell. The original marble sculpture is now in the Louvre Museum; it was replaced by a bronze replica at the Palace of Versailles. Our model rests on a Siena yellow marble base with a cyma molding featuring three rows of patinated bronze foliage. The front feet are decorated with acanthus leaves and stylized flowers. Restoration period, circa 1830. Dimensions: W: 35cm, D: 15cm, H: 25cm.
