Carrara marble bust of the Génie de la danse after Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux. It depicts a smiling young man whose long hair and drapery flutter in the wind. This figure is based on the central figure of the group "La Danse", created between 1863 and 1869 by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux for Charles Garnier's Paris Opera. With a realistic treatment, the sculptor retranscribed the sensation of movement. The sculpture stands on a pedestal. It is signed J.B. Carpeaux on the back.
Jean-Baptiste CARPEAUX (1827-1875) was a French sculptor. He won the Prix de Rome in 1854 which allowed him to go to Italy to study the great masters. He kept a taste for movement and expressiveness. He made an Ugolin surrounded by his four children, which attracted great interest despite the fact that he did not respect the demands of the Academy. Loved by Napoleon III, he made many busts of the imperial family and participated in the decoration of several emblematic places in Paris such as the Pavillon de Flore in the Louvre or the Opéra Garnier. The original of La Danse is now in the Musée d'Orsay.
