Carrara marble bust of the Genius of Dance after Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux. It depicts a smiling young man whose long hair and drapery billow in the wind. This figure is based on the central figure of the group "The Dance," created between 1863 and 1869 by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux for Charles Garnier's Paris Opera. With a realistic style, the sculptor conveys the sensation of movement. This sculpture rests on a pedestal. It is signed JB Carpeaux on the back.
Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-1875) was a French sculptor. He won the Prix de Rome in 1854, which allowed him to travel to Italy to study the great masters. He retained a taste for movement and expressiveness. There, he created Ugolino Surrounded by His Four Children, which aroused great interest despite his disregard for the Academy's requirements. A favorite of Napoleon III, he created numerous busts of the imperial family and contributed to the decoration of several iconic Parisian landmarks, such as the Pavillon de Flore at the Louvre and the Opéra Garnier. The original sculpture, The Dance, is now in the Musée d'Orsay.
