An exceptional Louis XVI style cylinder secretary in rosewood and mahogany marquetry with a lozenge pattern, decorated with gilt bronze plaques depicting allegories: Music on the main panels and Sculpture on the side panels. It opens to reveal six drawers and a drop-front that uncovers a sliding writing surface and six small drawers. The central drawer beneath the drop-front has a secret compartment located underneath, which is opened by pressing a button. The secretary rests on four tapered legs. The top is made of Fleur de Pêcher marble—a historic marble used in the 19th century for exceptional pieces—and is surrounded by an openwork bronze gallery.
Attributed to the House of Beurdeley , one of the most important dynasties of furniture makers in the 19th century (1818-1895), particularly renowned for the quality of their bronze mounts and their choice of precious materials for the ornamentation of their furniture. Directly inspired by a model by the cabinetmaker Jean-Henri Riesener , executed in 1784 for the inner cabinet of Marie Antoinette's small apartment in the Tuileries Palace, and now in the Louvre Museum.
