A large Louis XVI period portico clock in white marble, gilt bronze, and blue Wedgwood-style faience. The two pedestals are decorated with chased and gilt bronze motifs depicting griffins, acanthus leaves, rosettes, and vases overflowing with flowers with goat's feet, as well as blue porcelain medallions with white decoration in the Wedgwood style, featuring scenes of two draped women in classical attire, one with a dog and the other with a bird. The two pedestals are surmounted by openwork bronze medallions with vegetal frames containing mythological scenes of abduction: Psyche carried off by Favonius (Zephyr in Greek) and Proserpine by Pluto. The finial is in the form of a floral urn with two handles in the form of women's heads and a chain. The white enamel dial features Arabic numerals for the hours and quarters. It is topped with a half-wreath of oak and laurel leaves and musical trophies. The hour hand is adorned with a star. The pendulum is in the shape of Apollo's head. The rectangular white marble base rests on four small toupie feet.
The British earthenware and porcelain factory Wedgwood was founded in 1759 by Josiah Wedgwood. One of the largest producers of British pottery, it specialized in creating unglazed, mottled earthenware, most often tinted pale blue, covered with bas-relief decorations in white earthenware. These cameo-style decorations were inspired by the taste for antiquity resulting from Greek and Roman archaeological discoveries. Of very high quality, these pieces are often compared to porcelain by collectors.
