An important plaster sculpture depicting the Discobolus, the ancient athlete captured in the movement preceding the discus throw. The taut body, raised arm, and gaze turned towards the ground create a figure that is both dynamic and balanced.
The sculpture is based on the famous model attributed to the Greek sculptor Myron. The original, created in bronze in the mid-5th century BC, is now lost; it is known through ancient copies, primarily in marble. This iconic work marks the transition to classical Greek sculpture and is distinguished by its study of movement and anatomy.
This plaster cast, from the Louvre's plaster casting workshops, as attested by the seal "Musée du Louvre - Reproduction - Atelier de moule" at the base of the sculpture, transposes this ancient masterpiece into a spectacular sculptural format. Its monumental presence makes it a choice piece for a classical interior, a gallery, a library, or a collection devoted to ancient art and workshop casts.
