A lacquered wooden tray of-pearl marquetry Gabriel Viardot. The handles are carved in the form of coiled dragons. The rim imitates bamboo joints through engravings. The center of the tray is decorated with fine marquetry of wood, metal, and mother-of-pearl, featuring bouquets of flowers and birds. This piece dates from the late 19th century.
Gabriel Viardot (1830-1904) was a French wood sculptor and designer known for his creations of furniture and accessories in the "Chinese Japanese" style from 1860 onwards. This interest in Japonisme was fueled by the opening of Japan to the rest of the world in 1853, whose creations were present at various world exhibitions.
