Table lamp with chrome-plated wire base supporting shade with "cocoon" membrane. Design by Achille Castiglioni. Original model, close to the Gatto model, which was more widely published. The designs of Achille Castiglioni (Milan, 1918 - Milan, 2002) are often inspired by everyday life. He used ordinary materials such as extruded aluminum and stainless steel. Achille Castiglioni's genius lies in his ability to use a minimum amount of materials while creating forms with maximum effect. Along with other designers such as Marco Zanuso and Ettore Sottsass, Castiglioni engendered a tradition of craftsmanship, a family passion for sensuality and expressive forms. Together with his brothers, designers Livio and Pier Giacomo, Achille Castiglioni helped win the Milan Trienniale, and the Compasso d'Oro award. One of his favorite design strategies was to place a familiar form in an unexpected context. Castiglioni possessed a powerful creativity that gave rise to a diverse range of lamps, from the Taccia and Snoopy lamps to the imposing and highly celebrated Arco.
