A very large oil on canvas signed by Ernest Prunet (1840-1901), after the original work by Alexandre Cabanel, *The Birth of Venus*, exhibited at the Musée d'Orsay, depicting Venus Anadyomene. The original canvas was exhibited at the Salon of 1863, where it was a great success and was purchased by Emperor Napoleon III.
Several copies were subsequently made, including one commissioned by the American collector John Wolfe, which is located at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Our copy is signed in the lower left corner: DC / E. PRUNET
This copy appears to be mentioned in a reference to the Jean Nougaret Archives collection for Cabanel under entry III/IV Prunet copy in relation to a photocopy of the Gazette Drouot of November 30, 2001 p.191.
