Important gilt and patinated bronze clock featuring an architectural composition, flanked by two figures dressed in antique style, representing on one side Socrates holding the cup containing the hemlock and on the other a character wearing a short tunic, probably a disciple.
At the center, the sundial is integrated into a pedestal depicting a library, surmounted by a starry blue celestial globe. The rectangular base, resting on lion's paws, is adorned with a relief depicting Socrates' farewell to his family before his death sentence. Socrates is shown with his index finger pointing upwards, symbolizing the search for truth that transcends earthly life and the fear of death. He faces his family, who are walking away from him filled with sorrow.
The accusations for the condemnation of Socrates: he was prosecuted by Meletus and found guilty of impiety and of corrupting the youth by his critical questioning.
