A Louis XV style gilt bronze alcove clock depicting Cupid on a chariot drawn by a pair of doves amidst clouds, against a trellis background. The rocaille-style decoration is surmounted by a star. The white enamel dial features Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for the minutes and is protected by a domed glass cover. The hands are decorated with elegant vegetal scrolls.
The Louis XV style is characterized by its rocaille and dynamic elements. Decoration takes precedence over form, and curved lines over straight ones. Eighteenth-century bronze artisans took full advantage of this style, imbuing their compositions with great imagination, blending rocaille motifs with mythological references. This 19th-century clock reproduces the ornamentation of bronzes from the Louis XV period.
