A large Louis XVI period clock in gilt and patinated bronze and white marble, depicting a sculpted group of Diana, goddess of the hunt, holding her bow and making a gesture of refusal with her raised left hand. Beside her, the hunter Actaeon, holding a staff, appears to be trying to unite with her. The white enamel dial, framed by a bezel, is set at the center of a white marble base. The white and Portoro marble base is adorned with decorative bronze elements such as garlands of leaves or flowers, and hunting birds framing a frieze depicting Actaeon transformed into a stag and devoured by Diana's hounds.
During a hunt, Actaeon inadvertently surprises the goddess Diana (Artemis to the Greeks) bathing naked in a spring with her nymphs. Outraged at being seen by a mortal, Artemis punishes him by transforming him into a stag. No longer recognizing him, his own hounds attack and devour him.
With its sculptural composition and the combination of marbles, patinated bronze and gilded bronze, this clock is a remarkable decorative piece, inspired by mythology and the theme of hunting.
