Pierre Bobot (Paris, 1902-1974) was a talented French lacquer artist, a student of the École Bernard Palissy and, from 1921, of the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. At the beginning of his career, he worked for a restorer of antique Chinese lacquerware, where he learned difficult techniques that fascinated him and determined his vocation. From 1932 onward, he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne, then at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs and the Salon Nationale des Beaux-Arts. He collaborated with Leleu, Dominique, Jallot, and Pascaud, and sometimes created his own furniture, entirely lacquered or inlaid with ornamental motifs. Works by Bobot acquired by the City of Paris and the French State can be found at the Hôtel de Ville (City Hall), the Mobilier National (National Furniture Collection), the Ministry of Reconstruction, and the Hôtel des Tabacs (Tobacco Shop). He executed the panels presented by the President of the Republic to Queen Juliana and undertook significant work for French shipping companies and the Dutch ocean liner "Orange." A skilled craftsman, Pierre Bobot appreciated the inherent beauty of lacquer, favored the iridescence of gold and silver, and frequently revived engraved lacquer in imitation of ancient Chinese lacquer known as "Coromandel." He also achieved striking effects by layering two lacquers of different thicknesses: a plain background against which ornamental motifs—flowers, birds, or even anecdotal scenes—stand out in relief. He conceived his panels as a pretext for large decorative compositions, studying their design and iconography with meticulous care. A retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the Musée Carnavalet from October 2002 to February 2003.
