An important Empire-style cylinder desk in mahogany and flame mahogany veneer. This semi-cylindrical drop-front secretary features eight drawers with palmette-shaped keys: five in the frieze and three on an upper step, itself topped with a green marble slab. The drop-front is flanked by rich gilt-bronze ornamentation depicting winged Victories, palm fronds, a water leaf frieze, and a chariot driven by Cupid. Opening with two gilt-bronze swan-neck pulls, the cylinder reveals a leather-lined sliding top bordered by a gilt-tooled palmette frieze, a niche, and three drawers with floral pulls. The whole rests on four braced column supports. Circa 1855.
Dimensions of the writing surface: W 51.5 x L 119.5 cm
