Marble sculpture depicting Artemis, goddess of the hunt, dressed in a short tunic and wearing Roman sandals. She fastens her cloak over her right shoulder with a fibula.
Our sculpture signed by Pugi is a late 19th century replica of Artemis, also known as Diana of Gabii, a Roman marble sculpture from the time of Emperor Tiberius, discovered during excavations in 1792 in Gabii, Italy, and kept in the Louvre Museum.
Guglielmo Pugi (Fiesole, 1850-1915) was an Italian sculptor who lived in Florence from 1870 to 1915. He designed the bust of King Umberto I of Italy, which stands in the main square of his hometown of Fiesole. Several of his sculptures are on display at the Historical Alabaster Museum in Volterra, Italy.
