Large mythological bronze depicting Mercury or Hermes in flight. In Greek mythology, Hermes was the messenger of the gods, the protector of travelers, merchants, and flocks. He wears a petasos (a small, round, flat, winged hat) and carries a caduceus entwined with two serpents. The wings on his feet allow him to move swiftly and are one of his distinctive features. Mercury, portrayed as an athletic young man, is propelled into the air by a baby blower. In his flight, he raises his arm, pointing to the sky, the source of divine knowledge. The piece rests on a square base of Noir Cihigue marble. 20th century, circa 1930. Dimensions: W: 14cm, D: 36cm, H: 77cm. In good overall condition.
