A mythological alabaster bust depicting Diana in profile, her breast bare. Diana (or Artemis) is commonly represented as a tall, slender young huntress with her hair tied back and wearing a tunic. Goddess of the hunt in Greco-Roman mythology, she is both a symbol of chastity and, therefore, the protector of young women until marriage. The choice of this subject may have been motivated by the artist's intention to highlight the virtues of the model depicted as the goddess, or perhaps by the patroness. Late 19th century. Circa 1890. Dimensions: W: 31cm, D: 18cm, H: 50cm. In good overall condition, with some minor chips on the base and signs of wear.
