A pair of polychrome porcelain vases in the Sèvres style, covered and mounted in gilt bronze. The base rests on four rocaille claw feet and cartouches in the form of cut leather decorated with shells. The gilt bronze handles are adorned with lion's heads surmounted by a shell and terminating in a foliate motif. The lid is topped with a rocaille foliage bud and a pine cone. Marked HN no. 2.22 under the foot.
Each vase is decorated with a turquoise background and gold motifs depicting scenes within cartouches: a landscape scene and a "romantic scene." The landscapes present a marshy setting with an autumnal feel or the shores of a tranquil lake. In one scene, a young woman, wearing a dress with a gathered apron and a straw hat, is blindfolded while a young man in a pink doublet tickles her neck with a feather. In the other, a shepherdess in a pink apron holds a bundle of hay under one arm and a shepherd's crook in the other. She turns toward a gentleman in a rust-colored doublet and pink breeches who is showing her the way. This is a 19th-century French piece. Want to learn more about romantic scenes of this type?
