A pair of Louis XV period corner cabinets in end-grain marquetry on a rosewood ground, framed in violet wood. They open with two doors on the front, revealing three shelves. Beautiful ornamentation of jagged acanthus leaves in chased and gilt bronze, typical of the Louis XV period. Each corner cabinet has an antique green marble top. Stamped by Jean Lapie: "J*LAPIE".
Jean Lapie: at the heart of 18th-century furniture
A cabinetmaker who received his master's certificate in 1762, Jean Lapie established his workshop and store on the rue de Charenton, working for merchants and upholsterers. His output was not extensive, but he brought diversity and imagination to his work. His Louis XV and Louis XVI furniture pieces are adorned with veneer, mahogany, rosewood, ebony, and marquetry featuring flowers on a dark background, geometric designs, tile-like mosaics, or lacquer and varnish in the Far Eastern style. The upholsterer Maugé, on the rue Saint-André-des-Arts, purchased several pieces from him with hinged doors resembling books, including a curious commode disguised as a secretary desk and a bookcase.
