A large pair of Louis XVI style wall sconces in chased and gilt bronze, each with two twisted arms. Each sconces is adorned with goat heads, eagles holding garlands of flowers in their beaks, mascarons crowned with flowers, oak leaves, and acanthus leaves. The stem, decorated with scrolling foliage, is surmounted by a pine cone. Our pair of sconces was made after a design by Jean-Louis Prieur (1732-1795) – a sculptor and one of the most illustrious bronze workers of the Neoclassical period – executed around 1780, and held in the library of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Traditionally attributed to Pierre Gouthière (gilder and chaser to Kings Louis XV and Louis XVI), an identical pair is held at the Château de Fontainebleau and a second pair at the Cleveland Museum of Art. 19th century period, Circa: 1860. Dimensions: W: 30cm, D: 17cm, H: 66cm. In excellent condition.
