Pair of Medici vases in soapy opaline, decorated with two polychrome medallions depicting sprays of flowers. A wreath of anemones and forget-me-nots painted in gold and blue decorates the rim of the body. This floral motif is framed by gold-painted fillets, stylized floral motifs and branches, which accentuate the neck and base of the bowl.
This extremely fine decoration was executed by the workshop of Jean-Baptiste Desvignes (1786-1826), a painter and gilder of glass, crystal and porcelain, who became famous for his technique of painting on opal crystal with gold or silver leaf and purely vegetal colours. The pieces from his workshop are characterised by the use of matte tones of dark blue and red, with a predilection for golden surfaces which dominate in the form of palmettes, florets and finely drawn garlands.
