Pair of important ormolu sconces with three strongly moving light arms, in the rocaille style of the Napoleon III period. Bronze allowed craftsmen under Louis XV to be highly imaginative, combining different rocaille motifs and emphasizing movement in their compositions. Circa: 1880
The reign of Louis XV was a time of imagination, fantasy and movement, of the primacy of decoration over form, of curves over straight lines, and of the omnipresence of rocaille motifs blending flora and fauna.
These Napoleon III sconces echo the fine chasing of bronzes under Louis XV, as well as its rocaille ornamental repertoire.
