Lacquered wood tray with Japanese mother-of-pearl marquetry decoration in the taste of Gabriel Viardot. The handles are carved in the shape of coiled dragons. The border imitates bamboo joints thanks to engravings. The center of the tray is decorated with a fine marquetry of wood, metal and mother-of-pearl. It is decorated with bouquets of flowers and birds. This is late 19th-century work.
Gabriel Viardot (1830-1904) was a French woodcarver and designer known for his creations of furniture and accessories in the "Japanese Chinese" style from 1860 onwards. His interest in Japonism was fueled by the opening of Japan to the rest of the world in 1853, and his creations were exhibited at various world fairs.
