A long polyptych comprising nine oban tate-e prints, illustrating the procession of Emperor Mutsuhito (Meiji) entering his new capital, the former Edo, renamed Tokyo "Eastern Capital," in September 1869. Signed by Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) and his pupil, Yoshikage, who is believed to have created the background. Publisher: Maruya Jinpachi. Circa 1880
The procession crosses the Kyôbashi (Kyô Bridge), where the emperor's palanquin is located, preceded by those of the wives and concubines, and by notables and soldiers, advancing on Nakabashi Avenue and passing the white marker that marks the limits of the city, while at the rear, the general staff of the new Meiji army parades on Ginza Avenue.
